With more than two decades of experience spanning artificial intelligence, computational biology, precision medicine, and business operations, he has led the development and commercialization of advanced AI-driven platforms that translate complex biological and clinical data into actionable insights. Dr. Akmaev has co-authored 40+ peer-reviewed scientific publications in bioinformatics, machine learning, systems biology, and healthcare analytics, including contributions to Bayesian AI methods and predictive healthcare modeling. He is also an inventor on numerous U.S. patents and patent applications covering biomarker discovery, molecular diagnostics, genomic analysis, precision medicine, and AI-enabled therapeutic development. Alfredo Iacoangeli
Professor of Bioinformatics and Artificial Intelligence for Genomic Medicine
Professor Alfredo Iacoangeli is Professor of Bioinformatics and Artificial Intelligence for Genomic Medicine at King’s College London, where he leads a large interdisciplinary research group bringing together expertise in statistical genetics, bioinformatics and AI. Originally trained in physics, he obtained his PhD in Computational Structural Biology from Sapienza University of Rome before moving to King’s College London, where he began working in statistical genetics, artificial intelligence and precision medicine.
His research focuses on developing next-generation AI methods to uncover the biological mechanisms underlying human disease and advance computational genomic medicine by integrating population-scale genomic, molecular and clinical data. His group combines methodological AI research with translational applications to identify therapeutic targets, discover biomarkers, stratify patients into biologically meaningful subgroups and support precision medicine.
Professor Iacoangeli leads multidisciplinary research programmes involving computational scientists, clinicians, biologists and industry partners, and has extensive experience coordinating national and international collaborations. His long-term vision is to develop foundation AI models capable of learning mechanistic representations of human biology and disease, enabling virtual experimentation, accelerating therapeutic discovery and advancing precision medicine across a broad spectrum of diseases.
